From Mariah Carey to Mariah Carey, it was one for the record books (and most likely each song will bring TikTok memories to mind and perhaps a lot to process). Released in June 2020, “Heat Waves” replaced “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as the song that spent the most weeks on the Hot 100 charts before reaching #1 after charting for 59 weeks. It also set the record at 91 total weeks on the chart before being displaced by the annual Christmas flood. “As It Was” became the first song to reach #1 on five separate occasions and also broke the record shared by Elton John, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey for most weeks at #1 for a song by a solo artist. Additionally, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” held the top spot for five weeks, becoming Disney’s longest-tenured #1 song (“A Whole New World” topped the chart for one week in 1993) and holds the record for the most credited artists on a number one song with 7 (including Encanto cast as one). Sam Smith and Kim Petras became the first publicly non-binary and transgender artists to reach #1. Taylor Swift released Midnights in October and that same week she became the first artist to hold each of the top 10 spots on the Hot 100 (it also represented the first time all ten spots were held by female artists; conveniently for her, they were all her). Oh, and Adele, Drake, Future, Tems, Jack Harlow, Lizzo, 21 Savage, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, and Steve Lacy also released number one songs.
