Exploring the #1 Hits That Defined an Era

As we look back at 2009, it’s clear that it was a year of significant transitions in popular music. From the rise of electropop to the continued dominance of hip-hop and R&B, the Billboard Hot 100 charts of 2009 paint a vivid picture of a diverse and evolving musical landscape. Let’s take a journey through the year’s biggest hits and the stories behind them.

The Year of Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas

2009 was undoubtedly the year Lady Gaga burst onto the scene, revolutionizing pop music with her unique style and catchy beats. Her debut single “Just Dance” kicked off the year at #1, setting the stage for her rapid rise to superstardom. But it was the Black Eyed Peas who truly dominated the charts, spending an unprecedented 26 consecutive weeks at #1 with “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling.”

Hip-Hop’s Continued Reign

While pop was making a comeback, hip-hop maintained a strong presence on the charts. Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind,” featuring Alicia Keys, became an instant classic and an unofficial anthem for New York City. Eminem, Dr. Dre, and 50 Cent’s collaboration “Crack a Bottle” showcased the enduring appeal of rap’s biggest names.

R&B Smoothness

R&B continued to evolve, with artists like Beyoncé (“Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”) and Jamie Foxx (“Blame It”) scoring #1 hits. These tracks blended smooth R&B vocals with elements of hip-hop and electronica, reflecting the genre’s adaptability.

The Rise of Electropop

2009 saw the rise of electropop, with tracks like Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” and The Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” incorporating heavy electronic elements. This trend would continue to influence pop music in the years to come.

Country Crossover

While pop and hip-hop dominated, country music made its presence felt with Taylor Swift’s “You Belong with Me” reaching #1 on the Country chart and #2 on the Hot 100. This crossover hit foreshadowed Swift’s eventual transition to pop music.

Notable #1 Hits of 2009:

The first of the baby boomers who were rock ‘n’ roll teenagers in the 1950s began to assume leadership roles throughout American society and they continue to impact society (our most recent two presidents were from this group born in the early 40s). Over in England, skiffle groups were all the rage and teens had sporadic access to American music. When post-war embargoes were lifted in 1959, British youth raced to buy guitars and start their own skiffle bands, copying the styles of their favorite British and American artists. But no British act had ever topped the US charts until Mr. Acker Bill’s unlikely clarinet solo “Stranger on the Shore” became the top-selling pop album of the year in 1962. The Tornados had a hit with Telstar that year, and then The Beatles had three straight #1 songs in 1964. From the on, the door was wide open. The second-most successful act of the 60s was The Supremes, who first topped the chart in 1964, and had back-and-forth hits along with The Beatles into the next decade. #musichistory #learnontiktok #music #oldschool #yourmusiceducation #60smusic #1960 #1961 #1962 #1963 #1964 #1965 #1966 #1967 #1968 #1969 #elvis #thebeatles #thesupremes #therollingstones #britishinvasion #ukmusic #usmusic ","thumbnail_url":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c5839470-7617-4da5-ab90-810e323f0cff_1080x1920.jpeg","author":"🎶 Your Music Education","embed_url":"https://cdn.iframe.ly/api/iframe?media=1&app=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tiktok.com%2F%40yourmusiceducation%2Fvideo%2F7204667542550547758%3Fis_from_webapp%3D1%26sender_device%3Dpc%26web_id%3D7059228916439959045&key=e27c740634285c9ddc20db64f73358dd","author_url":"https://www.tiktok.com/@yourmusiceducation","belowTheFold":false}" data-component-name="TikTokCreateTikTokEmbed">

@yourmusiceducationThe 1960s were a decade of tremendous political and cultural change in the United States. It was the best of times, it was the strangest of times. The Four Seasons led by their East Coast style falsetto held the #1 position on the US charts for 10 weeks and were the only act to have two chart-topping hits on the Hot 100 that year. Dances led the charts with the Twist, Peppermint Twist, Loco-Motion (everybody’s doing it), and even the Monster Mash (it was a veritable graveyard smash). AM Radio ruled especially with Wolfman Jack at the helm on the newly-revived 250,000 watt border blaster XERF broadcasting from Ciudad Acuña, just in the Mexican side of the Rio Grande from beautiful Del Río, TX (the audio clip from XERB in 1967-1968 is still representative of his style). #musichistory #learnontiktok #music #oldschool #yourmusiceducation #60smusic #1962 #wolfmanjack #amradio #thetokens #chubbychecker #brucechannel #conniefrancis #shelleyfabares #elvispresley #theshirelles #ackerbilk #raycharles #davidrose #bobbyvinton #neilsedaka #littleeva #thefourseasons #frankievalli #frankievalliandthefourseasons #bobbyborispickett #bobbyborispickettthecryptkickers #thecrystals #thelionsleepstonight #thetwist #pepperminttwist #dukeofearl #heybaby #dontbreaktheheart #johnnyangel #goodluckcharm #soldierboy #icantstoplovingyou #rosesarered #sheila #sherry #monstermash #hesarebel #biggirlsdontcry #telstar ","thumbnail_url":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/8912ba7f-10df-40e1-95cc-984f1f2b7131_1080x1920.jpeg","author":"🎶 Your Music Education","embed_url":"https://cdn.iframe.ly/api/iframe?media=1&app=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tiktok.com%2F%40yourmusiceducation%2Fvideo%2F7203598204196195630%3Fis_from_webapp%3D1%26sender_device%3Dpc%26web_id%3D7059228916439959045&key=e27c740634285c9ddc20db64f73358dd","author_url":"https://www.tiktok.com/@yourmusiceducation","belowTheFold":false}" data-component-name="TikTokCreateTikTokEmbed">

@yourmusiceducationAhh 1962, the year the best-selling song of the year was a clarinet solo and the trombone-focused instrumental “The Stripper” held the top spot for one week.
